We have our first blood bath on the 22nd of this month, the first benchmark. There are 75 questions and 25 of them are ECG rhythms. I don't know how many of you have ever tried to decipher these but man they are tricky. I have most of them down but there are like 5 of them that I am just a dead bat. I think I have it and then they through in a different version of it and, BOOM I am lost again!
Sometimes I am amazed that we have come up with all the equipment and skills that we have. I come into the program wondering how I would be able to wrap my brain around all of this but day by day I see improvement. Our brains are miracles. I have learned things that I thought would never be possible. Like try to read this rhythm:
If you see this...NOT GOOD! This is just a little of everything mainly Ventricular Fibrillation. If you have this you have problems. With VF you want to treat with Epinephrine, Vassopresin, or Amiodarone. You could also shock the patient, or just watch it and let it burn, but that would not be ethical. As crazy as this is it is also so much fun!! It is amazing how we can live from day to day. Our bodies are made by the hand of God that is for sure.
CHEER-LEADING??
I learned this week that my teacher could have been a cheerleader/flight attendant. We were going over our cardio worksheet and he was displaying very nicely have to put on the leads in a very womanly way. Then when we were trying to remember some sayings for ECG readings he was able to let off a cheer with arm movements and everything. I don't think I will ever forget that. But hey, I know those 4 rhythms. What ever works, works!
Although we were not allowed to do EJ's on each other this week we got to watch a couple. Just picture a pen coming at your neck! It was AWESOME! Props to Josh for being the one to get poked. I volunteered but I did not have a big enough vein :( That is one of the closes access points to the heart so if you cant get a peripheral IV and need to get meds to the heart fast that is a great one.
I am so grateful for study groups! I don't think I would be anywhere close to learning my rhythms as much if I did not have my great study group. They keep me for going nuts! We are able to bounce ideas off each other and explain the rule in different ways to help us understand. Plus we are funny. I AM FUNNY! I think. I get to laugh everyday and that is a great stress relief!
Overall this week has been great. I am alive, breathing, and learning. I will survive, even with only a couple hours of sleep a night! Study hard to play hard!!
